The heart of the work

Mysticism

Mysticism is not an escape from reality. It is training for meeting reality completely.

Everything Andrew Harvey teaches grows from direct experience of the sacred. Sacred Activism is one strand of that life; the root is mystical. Across more than thirty books he has walked with many traditions, always looking for the living fire they share.

01 · Rumi and the Sufi path

The way of passion

In Paris, Andrew began a decade of study of Rumi and Sufism with the scholar Eva de Vitray-Meyerovitch. Rumi became for him not a poet to admire from a distance but a living guide to ecstatic, embodied love.

Books such as The Way of Passion, Light upon Light and Perfume of the Desert grew from that apprenticeship. The teachings below carry the same fire into song, movement and contemplation.

02 · Kabir

Fierce, golden poetry

Andrew’s work with Kabir brings fierce poetry into a world that needs courage. His teachings invite the reader to encounter the poems as a living practice, not only as words on a page.

Turn Me to Gold gathers 108 of his poems. A year-long course, a dedicated teaching and an album of music inspired by Kabir open the same door in different ways.

03 · Christ and the Magdalene

A path of radical transformation

In Son of Man, Andrew rediscovers Christ not as a remote figure of doctrine but as a mystical path of radical transformation, open to anyone willing to walk it.

His newest book, The Magdalene Revolution, explores the return of the sacred feminine and the birth of radical equality. The teachings here hold Christ and the Magdalene together.

04 · The Divine Mother

The feminine face of God

Hidden Journey, The Divine Feminine with Anne Baring and The Return of the Mother trace one of the central passions of Andrew’s life: the recovery of the Divine Mother in every tradition.

For Andrew the Mother is not a soft idea. She is the ground of compassion, justice and the sacredness of all life, and her return asks something real of us.

05 · Buddhist practice and tonglen

Compassion as daily discipline

Andrew co-edited The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying with Sogyal Rinpoche and Patrick Gaffney. From the Tibetan tradition he carries tonglen, the practice of breathing in suffering and breathing out compassion.

Practice is where mysticism becomes trustworthy. These offerings give it shape: guided meditation, forty-day journeys and a simple set of sacred best practices.

06 · Andrew’s India

Where the journey began

Andrew was born in Coimbatore, south India, and lived there until he was nine; those years planted his sense of the unity of all religions. In 1977 he returned to India, where a series of mystical experiences began his spiritual path.

In Ladakh in 1983 he took the Bodhisattva vows with Thuksey Rinpoche, and A Journey in Ladakh won the Christmas Humphreys Award. In 1992 he met Father Bede Griffiths in south India, reconciling the mysticisms of East and West. Alongside them stand Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, whose vision of divine transformation he draws on deeply.
